Sen. Lott wins No. 2 minority post

Sen. Trent Lott of Mississippi prevailed by one vote Wednesday in his bid to clinch the No. 2 spot in next year's Senate GOP leadership.

Lott beat out Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee for the job of minority whip by a vote of 25-24, according to his press secretary, Susan Irby. The vote marked an impressive comeback for the Mississippi lawmaker who fell out of favor with his party four years ago after making remarks viewed as racially insensitive.
